Honey is known as one of the drinks that can increase your stamina and make the body fit. But honey can also function as an antibacterial. Research conducted by the University of Texas Health Science Center is known that honey is rich in sugar, so it can help create an environment in which bacteria can not survive. As quoted from eHow, Tuesday (29/06/2010) honey works against bacteria in two ways, depending on the type of honey used.
In the most common type of honey used, usually bees add an enzyme that can release hydrogen peroxide. It is known that the active ingredient is a compound that can kill bacteria.
Whereas if you use a special honey known as Manuka honey, food of bees is nectar from flowers of manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), then it could provide additional anti-bacterial properties.
Both types of honey can be effectively used, but success varies greatly depending on how the bees are bred in a particular group or batch. Therefore not all honey can be generalized in terms of its ability as an anti-bacterial.
One application of the honey is to help kill bacteria that cause acne and cleaning up the remnants left behind. These applications are typically used in conjunction with water.
Jennifer Eddy, MD from the University of Wisconsin said a combination of antibacterial agents with hydrogen peroxide produced by bacteria, can help clear the infection hard to treat with other methods.
It also can help prevent the appearance of acne again. Honey is added to water can also help cleanse the skin from the remnants of acne. Honey also contains antioxidants that can make the skin look healthier, look younger and maintain skin smoothness and softness.
